About the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service (OMNS)

The Orthomolecular Medicine News Service (OMNS) is an independent, peer-reviewed public education service dedicated to advancing nutritional and orthomolecular medicine. Founded in 2005 by the late Dr. Andrew W. Saul, in collaboration with Dr. Hugh Riordan and Steven Carter of the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (ISOM.ca), OMNS was created to make scientific information on vitamins, nutrition, and integrative health freely and widely accessible-especially in the face of censorship, bias, and institutional neglect.

OMNS originated as a response to the exclusion of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine from mainstream indexing platforms such as PubMed, transforming decades of research into a public online archive at orthomolecular.org . Since its founding, OMNS has published over 470 peer-reviewed articles, translated into eight languages, with contributions from a global editorial board of more than 40 scientists and physicians.

Importantly, OMNS operates without advertising, sponsorship, or industry and government funding. It maintains full editorial independence to ensure the uncensored dissemination of health information based solely on scientific evidence and clinical experience, with the goal of enriching public health worldwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, OMNS played a vital role in countering medical censorship and promoting life-saving, nutrition-based protocols-releasing over 55 bulletins in 2020 alone.

To date, OMNS has:

  • Reached over 8.7 million readers
  • Achieved an average open rate of 36%-exceptional for an email publication
  • Maintained a growing subscriber base of more than 31,000 active readers worldwide

Following Dr. Saul's passing in early 2024, OMNS continues its mission under the leadership of Dr. Richard Z. Cheng, M.D., Ph.D., a U.S.-based physician, scientist, educator, and health consultant. Dr. Cheng is a global advocate for the orthomolecular medicine-based approach, integrating the best elements of low-carbohydrate medicine, functional and anti-aging medicine, and other innovative medical disciplines. His emphasis on healthy lifestyle practices includes low-carbohydrate nutrition, elimination of ultra-processed foods (including industrial seed oils), and intermittent fasting-all unified into a comprehensive strategy for disease prevention and health optimization, aiming for a healthy, happy, and long life for all. This integrative approach, grounded in orthomolecular medicine, has transformed his own health and enabled many of his clients and patients to reverse conditions long thought to be incurable.

Nutrition as Therapy: The Orthomolecular Difference

At the heart of OMNS's mission lies a distinct nutritional philosophy known as orthomolecular nutrition.

Orthomolecular nutrition differs fundamentally from conventional approaches in both philosophy and clinical practice. While conventional nutrition often focuses on meeting minimal daily requirements to prevent deficiency diseases (such as scurvy or rickets), orthomolecular nutrition seeks to optimize health by providing optimal-not merely minimal-levels of essential nutrients.

For example, while conventional guidelines may recommend 90 mg of vitamin C daily to prevent scurvy, orthomolecular medicine often uses several grams per day to modulate immune function, reduce inflammation, and combat oxidative stress-depending on individual clinical needs.

This approach involves the use of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other natural substances in doses that are frequently much higher than government RDAs. These dosages are tailored to individual needs based on genetic variation, metabolic demands, and disease states. As OMNS emphasizes, orthomolecular therapy is guided by biochemical individuality, clinical experience, and a solid foundation of scientific research-prioritizing therapeutic results over consensus-based norms.

Orthomolecular medicine views nutrients not merely as supplements to an otherwise balanced diet, but as powerful therapeutic agents capable of preventing, managing, and often reversing chronic diseases. This paradigm shift elevates nutrition from a peripheral concern to a central pillar of personalized, evidence-based health care.

Under the leadership of Dr. Cheng and the OMNS editorial board, the organization remains committed to carrying forward the legacy of orthomolecular pioneers such as Dr. Linus Pauling, Dr. Abram Hoffer, Dr. Hugh Riordan, and Dr. Andrew Saul. Together, they aim to update and expand orthomolecular medicine through cutting-edge research, clinical insights, and integrative strategies-continuing to lead as a trusted voice for evidence-based, patient-centered care worldwide.

OMNS remains a global leader in orthomolecular medicine, advocating for the safe and effective use of micronutrients-such as vitamins C and D3, magnesium, zinc, and others-in the prevention and treatment of both acute and chronic diseases. The orthomolecular approach has demonstrated efficacy across a wide spectrum of conditions, including infectious diseases, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mental health disorders, and cancer. OMNS's mission is to empower patients and practitioners with reliable, science-backed knowledge to restore and protect health.
